Lithium, represented by the chemical symbol Li and atomic number 3, is an alkali metal with a soft, silvery-white appearance. It holds the distinction of being the lightest metal and the lightest solid element under standard conditions. Similar to other alkali metals, lithium is highly reactive and flammable, necessitating storage in mineral oil. When freshly cut, it displays a metallic luster, but exposure to moist air leads to rapid corrosion, resulting in a dull silvery gray or black tarnish. In its pure form, lithium is not found naturally but rather exists in compounds, typically ionic, such as pegmatite minerals, which were historically the primary source of lithium.
